1958-1961. The first field work trip of Moerman in Thailand. He spent almost 3 years to collected field data about the Lue society, tradition, culture, and daily life of Tai Lue community at Ban Phaed, Payao province. 3295 records of slide, photograph, punch card, letter, notebook, typescript, and map.

Planning the development of schooling

| August 16, 1960. The principal of Chiang Ban School was planning the development of schooling by encouraging students to apply knowledge from the classroom to real life. He planned to open a shop in the school, so the students could take care it by themselves. They would gain valuable experience this way. | Punch card

| June 8, 1960. During the beginning of children’s study, teachers needed to use the northern dialect and Lue language for teaching. When they reached to third and fourth class in primary school, the children began to increase their understanding of the central Thai language. But this would typically be forgotten if they left the school. Most parents did not realize the importance of higher education for their children because they needed help with the work at home or in the fields. However, some parents began to realize the importance of higher education for their children because they wanted them to work in the government service. | Punch card

| September 5 and 8, 1960. To attend high school in Chiang Kham district required a lot of money. Children from Chiang Kham village who continued on to high school did not do well with school work because they had no friends from the village. | Punch card

| September 2 and 8, 1960. Some parents thought that there was no need to send children to nursery school for preparation in advance of primary school, because when children grew up they were certain to attend school. However, the main reason parents in Chiang Khan did not sent their children to nursery school due to insufficient income. | Punch card

Education

| January 6, 1960. In Chiang Kham district, there was a problem with an insufficient number of teachers. Each teacher was responsible for more than 60 students. Another problem regarded the language for teaching, teachers had to teach students in Tai Lue or the Northern dialect. The teachers also had to cover various issues to do with health care. January 16, 1960. Moerman observed Teacher's Day. On that day, there was a Buddhist ceremony and an official ceremony held by the District. July 16, 1960. The Government determined that a teacher could be responsible for 40 students. | Punch card
