1958-1961. The first field work trip of Moerman in Thailand. He spent almost 3 years to collected field data about the Lue society, tradition, culture, and daily life of Tai Lue community at Ban Phaed, Payao province. 3295 records of slide, photograph, punch card, letter, notebook, typescript, and map.

Khamwaw stole horse

| February 28, 1961. The headman announced at a meeting that the police were investigating the case of Khamwaw with charges of stealing a horse. He decided to inform everyone in the village. However, Khamwaw said that the owner of the horse just asked him to bring the horse. | Punch card

Dispute within the family of the headman

| February 20, 1961. There was a severe dispute within the family of the village headman. He wanted to sell some things (?). Chan did not agree with the Headman. She complained the headman had never bought new clothes for her at all, even though he could sell rice. But the headman had never shared money with the family. | Punch card

Controversy

| February 15, 1960. There was controversy at the home of Bun Chan between a man from Chiang Ban and a man from Chiang Khan. The latter drew out a knife and yelled out the challenge to fight. The headman investigated the incident and built rapport with the district administration. That was the reason the village headman of Chiang Khan acknowledged the incident. April 16. The man from the Chiang Khan came along with the headman to Ban Phaed headman (Kham Ping) to investigate. At last both (the man from Chiang Khan and the man from Chiang Kham) contributed money to buy liquor and distributed it among all the people who suffered from their contention. | Punch card

Separation (Divorce?) between Chanthapawn and Chan Ban

| April 28, 1960. Villagers had gathered to witness the separation (divorce?) of Chanthapawn and Chan Ban as a result of Chanthapawn’s fondness for drinking alcohol at all times. There was a contract within which the agreement covered division of property. For example, the cattle was still common property. It would be taken care of by Chanthapawn. However, he had no right to sell if both parties did not agree to it. If either party was required to reconcile the other had to compensate with the amount of 500 Baht. | Punch card

Rape

| February 13, 1960. There was an assault incident and attempt to rape a girl. One of the suspects was a boy from Ban Phaed. According to investigation of a headman, the victim was invited to identify the young man as perpetrator. However, the girl testified quite indistinctly about the place and time of the incident. The young man who was identified denied the allegations and claimed that he had witnesses who could attest to his innocence. The headman could conduct only a preliminary investigation and took notes for reporting the incident to the district, and finally, after negotiations between the injured girl and the family of the young man, acknowledged the suspect. She received a compensation of 200 U.S. and the man promise to not to come to Ban Phaed anymore until everything was no longer being spoken about in the town. | Punch card

Nai Saeng and Village headman

| February 6, 1960. During the preparations on the day of the house warming for Moerman’s new home, Saeng quarreled severely with the village headman. He grabbed a sword to attack the headman, and villagers gathered to stop him. Feb 9, 1960. Saeng must ask for pardon from the headman by offering two bottles of village rice wine and another 10 baht. During the feast the headman was drunk and insulted Saeng. But he was restrained and did not fight back. In fact, the headman was jealous of Saeng, who represented the mill and he provided all the rice to sell in town | Punch card

Trouble cases.

| April 16, 1960. Kham Daeng and Chom fought each other because of Aew. Kham Daeng was injured and reported the incident to the police. The police commissioned the headman to settle the problem because it was community affair. Lastly, both arrived to a settlement to resolve the problem. | Punch card

Theft of bicycle seat

| April 16, 1960. Khamlai said that Lad and Ngoeng hang around her bike. It was later found that the seat had been removed. Both refused the accusation, despite being suspects. But the headman could not do anything. April 17, 1960. The bike seat of Thong was taken away as well. | Punch card

| March 7, 1961. The headman let people know that Kham Chan and Bun needed money to buy medicine. Suk was also injured and required a lot of money for healing. The headman asked for help from the villagers because everyone in the village was a brother. | Punch card
