1958-1961. The first field work trip of Moerman in Thailand. He spent almost 3 years to collected field data about the Lue society, tradition, culture, and daily life of Tai Lue community at Ban Phaed, Payao province. 3295 records of slide, photograph, punch card, letter, notebook, typescript, and map.

Meeting at the temple

| February 6, 1960. There was meeting at the temple for a new sanctuary and to search for someone to set an offering on the altar. Boonsri asked for the return of the remaining money from the lottery sale of the village headman. She wanted to donate the money to the temple, but the headman had spent the money. Most people were not happy about the conduct of the headman. Thammachai blamed the headman; and he would be a ghost guardian of the monastery if he cound not repay the money. | Punch card

| February 13, 1961. In the villager's opinion, the sub-district headman was more important than the district administrative chief, because he was more wealthly. While the chief was knowledgeable, he was not wealthy. | Punch card

| February 19, 1961. After the meeting the village headman called Ngeu and Tun to order a stepladder to be made for the temple. It was for use in the case of a fire; but most people did not agree with his idea. | Punch card

Donating rice for sanctuary making

| February 19, 1961. Villagers gathered at the temple for a meeting. PoMai No made an announcement requesting the villagers to donate rice and proceeds from the sale of the rice would be used to build a sanctuary. This year, the villagers expected to complete the wall and the roof. Srichai spoke to Po Mai No about a decrease in the rice donations. But the latter did not agree. | Punch card

Spirits

| February 26, 1961. The householder invited authorities to conduct an exorcism ritual for the pillar of a haunted house. It was a commonly held belief that the authorities were representatives of the king and they thus held the rights to perform exorcisms. In fact, it was believed that the spirits were under the mandate of the king. | Punch card

| Everyone in the villages called Waen ‘doctor,’ even if he did not have medical certification (an illegal doctor – translator). He was also addicted to opium. | Punch card

Opinions of villagers on the headman

| January 9, 1960. While waiting at the mill in the Chiang Kham district, Saeng told Moerman that the headman could not trade at this mill, because the owner did not trust him. The headman often had problems with money, as a result the villagers did not trust him. If anyone did something wrong, it became the ‘talk of the town’ in the village market. | Punch card

Border Patrol Police

| March 16, 1960. Moerman talked with the border patrol police officer at a drinking party. The talk was mainly concerned with the border patrol police officer, such as his capabilities, sexual experiences with women from diverse races and etc. Moerman observed that everyone at the party was humble and keen to listen to what the officer had to say. | Punch card
