Change in rice farming in the Chiang Kham district

January 3, 1969. M.khaw had 110 rai [unit of area equal to 1,600 square metres - translator] of land. He planted his own land but he had to hire a tractor and driver to improve the cultivated area. January 4, 1969. At Tung Lo the owner of the land would prepare a tractor for plowing and planting the rice seeds. The tenants would be responsible for the plantation and the harvest. The owner would gain 70-80% of production, but the tenants gained 20%. However if the tenants used buffalo, they could gain 50% of rice production. Rice from San Pa Tong was of a delicious variety and the mill which bought the rice offered a favourable price for the rice from San Pa Tong.

April 17, 1960. The old CB man who visited Boonsri and caj confessed to a ghost that he had committed offenses to a woman. He prepared a dish with candles, flowers, and money to ask for forgiveness from the one who was hurt.

December 28, 1959. Moerman observed a controversy that took place in different places in Bangkok and in Chiang Mai. He thought that such incidents could attract more people. March 7, 1960. In Ban Phaed there was spat between a girl and a boy, and children stood around watching. Nai Boon came, stopped and took the boy back home.

The disappearance of MaeKaew

February 16-17, 1961. MaeKaew had a dispute with M. Khamdam and then she disappeared from the house. Neighbors were helping search for her. Some would say that she might have died and lived with a ghost. Some would say that she was not dead and may live in the trees or somewhere. At last she was found in a field. However, she did not feel that her actions make other people suffer at all.

Misappropriation of monastery funds by village headman

March 17, April 12.Village headman misappropriated temple funds. At a meeting the attendees agreed that they needed to sell some rice in case the monastery wanted to spend money. However some did not agree because the village headman was guilty of the misappropriation of the temple funds. The headman should be responsible for returning it to the monastery by selling cattle or carts.

Controversy at home where Moerman had stayed

Porn cried and was sad because of the controversy with the headman. Moerman advised Porn to stay with her mother who lived in Pha Lad. The headman was not good because he liked to drink alcohol.

The dispute within the family

June 15, 1960. Moerman and Mary Ann visited Cang at home and they met M. Kham, who asked Cang to stay at his home for couple of days because M. Kham had a dispute with his wife.

Problem within the family of Chai

June 20, 1960. Chai had twin sons. It was a commonly held belief that twins should be raised separately. A day later the adoptive father of Chai asked him to find a way to convince his wife, the adoptive mother of Chai, to not break up the life of the couple. Moerman noted a dispute at the district administration office. A man wanted to separate his wife, but his wife did not consent. The Clerk and the Assistant District Officer viewed the incident with a comic attitude.
