talk with Boetisantoso (13 Nov. 79)

Talking to Boetisantoso November 13, 1979. Boetisantoso was a consultant with the State Television and Ministry of Culture, and studied the impact of satellite communications, especially television. Advertising did not change the consumption patterns of people in rural areas. People watched television for entertainment rather than for learning, and news was to strengthen the leadership. In Java or Bali television was not in high demand, and a TV at the home of a key person or the public was considered sufficient. TV represented the affluence of an important person. People invested in the purchase of land, buffalo or other resources rather than buy a TV set, listening more to the radio.

Courtroom observation

June 3, 1969. Badin made observation of the courtroom. Many issues of interest such as 1) the meaning of the term “to postpone prosecution”; 2) the Bar exam was the key to career advancement for lawyers. Lawyers in provinces had less opportunity for career advancement compared to lawyers in Bangkok; 3) in the process of litigation over the land, the attorney for the defendants from Bangkok had a dispute with the judge. But in the end the two parties also agreed that several issues should be cut away, to speed up the proceedings of the hearing.

Khweng court observations

March 25, 1969. There was a conflicting provision between the plaintiff and the defendant in a case of threatening. Finally, the sentencing of the court was given in the defendant's favor (?).

Ban Paed

2529 B.E. A drinking party after the house spirit offering at Ban Kham Mee and Nang Kaew. Children were removing kapok from the pod. Moerman visited house 114 for a house warming ceremony. Po Saeng was splinting bamboo into strips, Kampan was making thatched roof, Mai Kham was repairing the fence, Lam and Lue were playing with the children and Po Saeng was making a loom pole.

Ban Paed's Songkran

2529 B.E. A ceremony to renew luck. Villagers were threshing flour to make noodles, and there was a ceremonial pouring of water with revered elders to ask for blessing. Women and men splash water and dance. Leum and Laem were cooking. It was a ritual for the home spirits.
