Ancestral Ritual

Scope and content :

This series consist of 301 photographs that Dr. Anan Ganjanapan took during his fieldwork in Prae and Lamapang province in 1986 and 1987. The first 196 photographs portrayed the ancestral ritual of Prae royalty lineage. Another 105 photographs are from the ancestral ritual in Lampang province. The ritual displayed process of ritual, spirit mediums, the ancestor house, ritual pavilion, participants, offering use for ritual, as well as belief.

| 14-16 March 1987 - Votive ritual to ancestral spirits (Phee Meng) Pictured is the ritual chief. As this family has not performed a ritual for a long time, they have had to hire a chief from another family. Dried fish is used as an offering. On the first day, the pavilion needs to be built before breakfast. The ritual chief, alongside anyone needing to perform a votive ritual and elderly members of the family, invites the ancestral spirits from the ancestral spirit house into the pavilion in order that they might receive the offerings and participate in the ritual. | Slide
