Perelman

| Moerman refers to Perelman (1958) on the issue of examples illustrating rules. The examples can clarify the rules, but if a sample is presented that does not comply with the rules, that does not mean that it does not conform to reality, merely that the rules require adjustment or change. | Punch card

Max Gluckman

| Morgan refers to Gluckman (1965), on the Barotse, and Cheyenne proverb: "An old boil is revived by a new boil”, presumably meaning that once water has been boiled, it can be made to boil again People who have been forgiven a basic offence will repeat their mistake. Those who commit a first offence are liable to be prosecuted. Moerman argues that the villagers are showing their dissatisfaction with settlements handed down by the court. | Punch card

Perelman

| Moerman refers to Perelman’s work (1968: 117-118) on the use of repeated words to convey the same arguments (i.e. tautology). Each time a word is used the meaning may change, depending on the occasion. Moerman questions whether such a model is equally valid in Thai, English and French, and looks at how tautology is used in different languages. | Punch card
